Marafivirus syrahense

Assigned virus:
grapevine Syrah virus 1 (GSV1)

The virus grapevine Syrah virus 1 is widely distributed and infects grapevine plants. It was originally described from declining grapevines of the cultivar Syrah in California, but has been subsequently reported from many other grapevine growing areas and from other cultivars. Infections have been associated with leafroll and other symptoms, but latent infections have been also described. The genome has a length of 6,481 nt, with a large open reading frame (ORF1).

Grapevine virus Q is regarded as a synonym for grapevine Syrah virus 1. It was described shortly after GSV1 and both genomes share more than 99% nucleotide identity (e.g. see Engel et al., 2010).
