Maladera castanea (Arrow, 1913) - (Asiatic garden beetle)
This species of cockchafer-like beetle is native to eastern Asia and has been recorded in North America since 1921. The larvae mainly feed on roots of grasses and have become a pest of turfgrass and some crops (e.g. see Held & Ray, 2009). The adults are nocturnal and hide in the ground during the day. They fly at night and feed on the leaves of various plants, preferring ornamentals. Nurseries near turfgrass can experience significant damage.
