This genus is widely distributed and contains around 500 species of cockchafer-like beetles. The larvae feed on roots and the adults on leaves. Some species are regarded as pests of crops or turfgrass, and some are invasive. For example, the Asiatic garden beetle, Maladera castanea, is native to eastern Asia and has been recorded in North America since 1921.
