Lyonetia clerkella (Linnaeus) - (apple leafminer)

The caterpillars of this leafminer moth form long and narrow mines in the leaves of apple, pear, cherry, plum, quince and peach. They can cause severe defoliation. The insect is found in various regions of Europe and Asia. Management involves the use of insecticides and/or mating disruption, using high concentration of the sex pheromone of this species. The pheromone is also used for monitoring populations. There are 2-3 generations per year. The adult moth has a wingspan of 7-9 mm.
