Lutzomyia whitmani (Antunes & Coutinho)

This sand fly is found in South America and is a major vector of human cutaneous leishmaniasis. In rural areas, the soil of domestic environments like chicken sheds or pigsties are common breeding grounds (Manteca-Acosta, 2021). Under laboratory conditions the immature stages, egg to pupae, last around 2 months, but can be longer if the development is interrupted by a diapause.
