Lutzomyia gomezi (Nitzulescu, 1931)
The sand fly is an important vector of Leishmania panamensis, the cause of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Central America. It is also found in the northern parts of South America, where it is considered to be a vector of Leishmania braziliensis which similarly causes cutaneous leishmaniasis.
The natural habitat appears to be nests, rock crevices and animal burrows in rain forests. However, it has also adapted to the peridomestic environment where it feeds on humans and domestic animals. It bites mainly between 18:00–20:00 h.
