Lutzomyia flaviscutellata (Mangabeira Fo, 1942)

This sand fly is widely distributed in central and northern parts of South America. In some areas it is regarded as the main vector of Leishmania amazonensis, the cause of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in humans. In addition, several arboviruses have been isolated from this species. L. flaviscutellata is mainly a sylvatic species that feeds on rodents, other vertebrates including marsupials and birds. It is weakly anthropophilic.

Lutzomyia flaviscutellata forms a complex of several closely related species, some of which have a similar behaviour and are apparently also able to transmit Leishmania. For example, the complex includes Lutzomyia olmeca
