Locustana pardalina (Walker, 1870) - (brown locust)
The locust is found in the Karroo region of South Africa. Outbreaks develop under favourable environmental conditions and result in the formation of hopper bands and swarms. The swarms can leave the Karroo region and migrate to surrounding parts of southern Africa, causing substantial crop damage. For example, the 1985-1986 outbreak resulted in serious damage to crops and grasslands. During periods of insufficient rain, the eggs of L. pardalina enter diapause and can remain viable for several years.
