Lettuce infectious yellows virus (LIYV)
This virus infects lettuce, melon and some other cucurbits in North America, resulting in significant losses. Yield may be reduced by more than 50%. It is of quarantine concern in other regions. Infected plants show symptoms of stunting, interveinal chlorosis, leaf rolling and brittleness. The virus is transmitted by whiteflies in a semi-persistent manner. It cannot be transmitted mechanically.
LIYV has a bipartite genome consisting of positive-sensed RNA. RNA1 contains three ORFs encoding replication-associated proteins and alone is capable of replication. RNA2 is predicted to encode seven proteins.
