Lepidopteran iteradensovirus 1

This virus was previously called "Bombyx mori densovirus" or "Bombyx mori densovirus 1" (BmDNV-1). It is a very small virus infecting silkworm cultures in Asia and causing the often lethal flacherie disease. The virus multiplies in the midgut cells of the silkworm, resulting in hypertrophied nuclei, flaccidity and a whitish colouration. The silkworms typically die after 1 to 2 weeks and infected cultures can experience significant losses.

There are several viruses which have been described as "Bombyx mori densoviruses". These are now assigned to various genera and families. The original Bombyx mori densovirus, renamed to Lepidopteran iteradensovirus 1 in 2013, belongs to the genus Iteradensovirus (before 2013 called Iteravirus), subfamily Densovirinae, family Parvoviridae. It is non-enveloped, spherical with a diametre of 20-22 nm. Its genome consists of linear, single-stranded DNA with only around 5 kb.
