Lasius Fabricius, 1804
This genus of ants contains more than 100 species and is common in North America, Europe and northern Asia. The workers feed mainly on honeydew excreted from aphids and protect these from predators. Several species are considered pests for farming aphids and promoting their infestations on crops.
The genus is characterized by several morphological characters like the short mesosoma, the small ocelli of workers and the relatively short funiculus on the antennae.
