Laelaps echidninus Berlese, 1887 - (spiny rat mite)

This mite has a world-wide distribution and is mainly found as a parasite of rats and other rodents. It has been shown to transmit human disease agents like Francisella or Argentinian haemorrhagic fever (Junin virus). It is, therefore, considered a health hazard.
