Laboratory observations of red imported fire ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) predation upon eastern tent caterpillars (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae)
Journal of Entomological Science 39 (3), 472-473
Abstract: The potential of the red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta) being a predator of the eastern tent caterpillar (Malacosoma americanum) was studied in the laboratpry. Fire ants successfully penetrated tents, killed the larvae inside and consumed them. The preferred host of the eastern tent caterpillar is Prunus serotina which is often found in disturbed habitats frequently inhabitat by the red imported fire ant. Therefore, the ant may have an impact on the tent caterpillar.
