Temperature-induced quiescence in the eggs of the desert locust
Journal of Economic Entomology 63 (5), 1398-1400
Abstract: Freshly laid eggs of both solitary and gregarious Schistocerca gregaria become quiescent for at least 85 days when incubated at 15.5°C. Quiescence was terminated by increasing the incubation temperature to the optimal range. After undergoing such a period of quiescence in early embryonic development, all eggs from solitary-phase females yielded black hatchlings, while the small percentage of green hatchlings normally obtained from eggs of gregarious females was totally eliminated.
