Ixodes holocyclus Neumann, 1899 - (Australian paralysis tick)

The tick is found in coastal areas of eastern Australia. The natural hosts are marsupials like bandicoots, possums and kangaroos. However, it also bites humans, dogs, cats, cattle, sheep and birds. Tick bites in humans are not uncommon in some areas.

During feeding, the tick injects neurotoxins into the host which can cause paralysis and occasional death. In the first half of the 20th century at least 20 human deaths had been attributed to the paralysis tick, most of them among children. In addition, the tick can transmit the Lyme disease, caused by Borrelia burgdorferi (Mayne et al., 2014).
