Hypoderma Latreille, 1818 - (cattle grubs)
This genus of warble flies is found in many temperate and subtropical countries and contains around 7 species. They parasitize mainly cattle and other ruminants. Occasionally humans and other mammals are also attacked. Eggs are attached to the hairs of the host and the young larvae bore into the skin. They migrate under the skin and cause swellings (warbles), pain, weight losses and reduced milk production.
The larval development takes several months and the mature larvae leave the host by drilling a hole through the skin. They drop to the ground and pupate in the soil. The adults are hairy, of a brownish colour and live for only 3-5 days. They do not feed.
