Hylastes ater (Paykull) - (black pine bark beetle)
The bark beetle is native to Europe and parts of Asia, but has been introduced into various other regions like New Zealand, Australia, South America and South Africa. Damage occurs mainly on young pines (e.g. Pinus radiata) which may be killed by attacks of the adult beetles during maturation feeding. As much as 30% seedling mortality has been recorded. Especially, stressed seedlings are likely to experience heavy damage.

The larvae develop in roots, trunks and bases of dead or dying trees. Outbreaks can occur during the re-establishment of pine plantations, when the beetles breed in stumps or branches of the felled trees and attack the newly planted seedlings.

Vernacular names
• Deutsch: Schwarzer Kiefernbastkäfer
• English: black pine bark beetle
• Français: hylesine noir du pin

The adults are black and 4-5 mm long. There are 1 or 2 generations per year, but larval development might extend to more than a year under certain conditions.
