Hyalomma scupense Schulze, 1918

This tick is found in drier parts of southern Europe and Asia, as well as in northern Africa. It parasitizes cattle, other ungulates, and other domestic or wild animals. Even humans can be infested occasionally. It transmits various livestock diseases like Theileria annulata or Anaplasma phagocytophilum.

The most common host is cattle with horses, sheep and goats being less often attacked. During its life cycle, larvae and nymphs develop on the same host, but then drop off for hibernation. During the next year a new animal will be infested, on which the tick completes its life cycle. Both hosts are typically bovines.

For a review of this species see Gharbi & Darghouth (2014).
