Humulus scandens (weed) (Lour.) Merr. - (Japanese hop)
This weed is native to eastern Asia, but invasive in Europe and North America. It was introduced into these regions as a medicinal herb and ornamental plant since the 1800s. It grows mainly near river banks and other moist areas. H. scandens can form dense stands, overgrowing other vegetation, climbing trees, and suppressing native plants.
H. scandens is an annual herbaceous vine (bine) that might reach a height of more than 5 m. The leaves have 5-7 lobes and a typical size of 8-10 cm. Male and female flowers develop on separate plants. Dispersal is mainly through seeds.
