Hoplolaimus columbus Sher, 1963 - (Columbia lance nematode)

This nematode is found in south-eastern parts of the U.S.A. and was first described from Columbia in South Carolina. The known distribution extends from North Carolina in the east to Louisiana in the south. There are also reports of this species from other tropical and subtropical regions like Pakistan (e.g. Qureshi et al., 2002).

H. columbus is parasitic on crops like cotton, soybean and corn. Yield losses have been estimated at around 10 to 25% for cotton, and can be more than 50% in soybean, making crop harvest uneconomical (Pérez et al., 2003). Management mainly involves the use of nematicides and resistant cultivars have not yet been developed.
