This section provides descriptions of the different research topics used to characterize a publication entered or edited with the Publication form, see Help:Publications#Research topics.

Research topics for pests/diseases/weeds

Select 1 or 2 topics from the following list if the article covers specific species (or genera) of pests, diseases or weeds.

Note: The selected topic(s) should apply to ALL pest/disease/weed species entered into the system. For example, if 2 pest species have been entered and the article covers taxonomic research for the first, but not for the second species, the topic "identification/taxonomy" should not be selected. If it is, the article would appear under "identification/taxonomy" in the publication lists of both species (which would be misleading for the 2nd species). In such cases, either select a different research topic which is applicable to both species, or if the first species is more important for the article, delete the second species from the list.

general biology - morphology - evolution

Assign a publication to this research topic if it covers:

  • morphology and development of the pest (including descriptions of larval stages), disease or weed
  • life cycle studies (see also population dynamics)
  • host plant studies (see also environment)

identification/taxonomy

damage/losses/economics

biocontrol - natural enemies

Use this topic for articles dealing with natural enemies, beneficials or antagonists of pests, diseases or weeds. If specific natural enemies have been entered into the system, select also 1 or 2 research topics from the section Research topics for beneficials or antagonists below.

Note: This topic is NOT used for botanical pesticides. For such articles, use the topic "control - general" instead.

pheromones/attractants/traps

environment - cropping system/rotation

Assign a publication to this research topic if it covers:

  • interactions of the pest, disease or weed with the the environment
  • influence of cropping practices on the pest, disease or weed
  • non-crop host plants
  • influence of weather, temperature or humidity on pests, diseases or weeds

control - general

new introduction of pest

population dynamics/ epidemiology

surveys/sampling/distribution

rearing/culturing/mass production

health/environmental effects of pesticides

quarantine treatments/regulations/aspects

resistance/tolerance/defence of host

transmission/dispersal of plant diseases

molecular biology - genes

pesticide resistance of pest

review

Use this topic for general review articles on the pest, disease or weed. For more specific review articles matching one of the described research topics use that topic.

thresholds/decision-support systems

meeting reports

Research topics for beneficials or antagonists

Select 1 or 2 topics from the following list if the article covers specific species (or genera) of natural enemies, beneficials, biocontrol agents or antagonists.

Note: The selected topic(s) should apply to ALL species of natural enemies entered into the system (see above).

general biology - morphology - evolution

identification/taxonomy

environment/habitat manipulation
