Helopeltis Signoret, 1858 - (mosquito bugs)
This genus is mainly found in tropical regions of Asia, Africa and Australia. It contains around 40 species of plant bugs. They are often polyphagous, sucking shoots and fruits. This results in dark lesions and often death of the shoots. Cultivated plants attacked include tree crops (like cacao or cashew), tea, cotton and various field crops. For example, Helopeltis theivora is a serious pest of tea and other crops in southern Asia.
The adult bugs are slender and mosquito-like with long legs and long antennae. A striking morphological feature of Helopeltis is a prominent dorsal, knobbed, spine-like structure arising from the middle of the scutellum.
