Helminthosporium solani Durieu & Mont. 1848 - (silver scurf of potatoes)

This fungus is wide-spread in potato growing regions and causes silver scurf on potato tubers, a disease which mainly develops in storage. High humidity and high storage temperatures promote the disease. The silvery lesions are mainly superficial on the periderm of the tubers and the damage is often only cosmetic. However, the disease can result in the rejection of potato shipments by the industry. The fungus spreads through seed potatoes and apparently can survive in the soil only for a few weeks.
