Haplothrips tritici (Kurdjumov 1912) - (wheat thrips)

This thrips is a pest of cereals (damaging the developing seeds) in Europe, Asia and northern Africa. Wheat is mainly attacked resulting in deformed grains, reduced yield and poor baking quality of the flour. The adult thrips are around 1.5 mm long and nearly all black. Females lay their eggs into the developing ears and the larvae feed on the flowers and the immature grains. Mature larvae leave the plant and overwinter and pupate in the soil. In spring the adults emerge from the soil and feed first on the young leaves before breeding in the ears.
