Hakea sericea (weed) Shrader - (needlebush or silky hakea)
This weed is native to eastern Australia. It has invaded New Zealand as well as South Africa (first record 1858), and has been introduced as an ornamental into other countries. It has become invasive in southern Europe and other areas. It some countries, it can form dense monospecific thickets that suppress native vegetation. In addition, the H. sericea thickets are a fire hazard.
H. sericea is a woody shrub that grows to a height of around 4 m. The needle‐like leaves usually grow to a length of 3-4 cm and are spiny. The white flowers are arranged in small groups along the branches. The seeds are heat‐resistant and are usually released from the fruits during fire. Thus, it seems to be adapted to fire events, with fire being part of the life-cycle of the plant.
For a review and diagnostic procedures see the respective EPPO datasheet (2019).
