Haematopinus suis (Linnaeus, 1758) - (hog louse, swine louse)

This blood-sucking louse is widely distributed and parasitic on pigs, infesting the head and other parts of the body. With a length of up to 5 mm in females, it is one of the largest species in the genus Haematopinus. Infestations can cause severe irritations, especially in piglets, slowing down the growth of the animals. One generation can be completed in about 3-4 weeks.
