Glyptapanteles Ashmead, 1905
This is a large genus of parasitoids that includes several hundred species. The genus is widely distributed and is found in temperate as well as in tropical regions. Several species are important natural enemies of the gypsy moth in Europe like Glyptapanteles liparidis. Some of them have been studied in North America for possible introduction into gypsy moth populations. However, releases have not resulted in establishment there.
The species are koinobiont endoparasitoids of Lepidoptera larvae which means, the host continues its development after parasitisation. In the Americas, most species are gregarious parasitoids, but around 20% are solitary. The mature wasp larva penetrates the skin and forms a cocoon for the pupa outside the host. Adult wasps feed on nectar, pollen or the excretion from aphids.
