Gasterophilus pecorum (Fabricius)

This species of bot fly causes gastric myiasis in domestic and wild horses. Females of G. pecorum lay their eggs on grasses or other plants, in contrast to other species of Gasterophilus which normally lay their eggs on the fur of horses. Horses can infect themselves with the 1st instar larvae during feeding. These complete their development in the mouth cavity and the 2nd instars migrate to the stomach or intestine where they moult to third instars, attach themselves to the gut wall and complete their development within 8–10 months.
