Galega officinalis (weed) L. - (common goatsrue)

This leguminous weed is native to Europe and some surrounding areas, but is invasive in parts of the Americas and some other regions like New Zealand. In Europe it is often grown as a forage crop and has been originally introduced as such into other regions. It is/was also used for herbal medicines.

In introduced areas, it can form dense thickets and monocultures in pastures and meadows. Apart from replacing more desirable forage plants, it can be toxic to livestock under conditions of drought and if other forage plants are absent. Young plants are less toxic.

G. officinalis is a perennial herbaceous plant grown to a height of 50 cm to > 1 m. It has narrow, alternate leaves and white to purple flowers.
