[Effects of Neem and rotenone on populations of Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) and on two species of aphids (Homoptera: Aphididae) on tomato in Ica, Peru]

Abstract: In tomato cultures cultivar Heinz 3302 in Tajahuana farm, in Ica, Peru managed with the botanical extracts neem and rotenone, against conventional chemical pesticides two main pest over population: tomato leafminer Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) and aphids Myzus persicae Sulzer and Macrosiphum euphorbiae Thomas were evaluated. The present work was carried out between July and September 1997 in a experimental area measured 1200 m2, divided into 15 plots, using CRDB with three replicates for each of five treatments with following dosages in active ingredient: rotenone [1] 640 mg/I, rotenone [2] 960g/l, neem [1] 16 mg azadirachtine/l, neem [2] 28 mg azadirachtine/I versus conventional chemicals used in rotation by the farmer as profenophos 1500 mg/l, chlorpyrifos 80 mg/l, chlorfuazuron 625 mg/l, lufenuron 750 mg/I and cartap 1000 mg/l. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of the two pests during nine samples were evaluated. In general, we did not observe difference to dosages evaluated between five treatments on number of eggs, larvae and damage of T. absoluta and on population, of wingless and apterous aphids. However, if we analyze each one of the nine evaluations during the phenological phases on tomato crop, rotenone [2] with 960 mg Al/I was the most effective on number of eggs, larvae and plants damaged by T. absoluta and neem [2] with 28 mg azadirachtine/l showed the highest effectivity on apterous aphid of M. persicae and M. euphorbiae.
