Local outbreak of the African Migratory Locust in the Red Sea area
FAO Plant Protection Bulletin 10, 61-63
Abstract: The solitary phase of Locusta migratoria migratorioides occurs on the Red Sea coastal plain in the Sudan and in Britrea and occasional dense populations are seen. A report is given of a small outbreak near Massawa in 1962, following the exceptionally heavy rains of winter/spring 1961/62, when typically gregarious hoppers infested Pennisetum, Sorghum or maize cultivations on alluvial soil. Similar outbreaks were recorded in 1925/26 and in 1950. Their significance is discussed.
