Epinotia granitalis (Butler, 1881) - (cypress bark moth)
This tortrix moth mines the bark of cypress and cedar in Japan. Trees like Cryptomeria and Chamaecyparis are attacked and the quality of the timber is affected by the feeding damage.
Females deposit their eggs at the base of the needles. The young larvae first bore into green branches, feeding on the inner bark. Later, they feed on the bark of the stem. The mature larvae leave the trunk and pupate in cracks in the bark. The adult moth has a wingspan of 13–16 mm.
