Host preferences and reproduction of four cereal aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae) on certain wheatgrasses, Agropyron spp.
Environmental Entomology 12 (2), 442-445
Abstract: Preferences and reproduction of Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), Macrosiphum avenae (F.), Rhopalosiphum padi (L.), and R. maidis (Fitch) were tested on 13 widely grown species of wheatgrass, Agropyron spp., in the seedling and mature stages of growth under controlled conditions in environmental chambers. Results are an index to the role of Agropyron spp. as potential alternative hosts for cereal aphids and aphid-transmitted plant virus diseases. S. graminum and R. padi were well adapted to most of the Agropyron spp. tested, especially in the seedling stage. M. avenae reproduced well on mature Agropyron spp. but was not well adapted to seedlings. Most Agropyron spp. were not reproductive hosts for R. maidis.
