Distribution of phytophagous mirids (Hemiptera: Miridae) on apple trees in relation to habitat availability
Environmental Entomology 12 (6), 1641-1645
Abstract: Habitat preferences, within apple trees, of nymphal and adult Lygocoris communis (Knight), Lygidea mendax Reuter, Campylomma verbasci (Meyer), and Heterocordylus malinus Reuter were investigated with respect to availability of leaf clusters and fruit clusters. The younger nymphs of L. communis, C. verbasci, and H. malinus showed a preference for branches with more fruit clusters. Older nymphs, except those of L. communis, and adults showed no significant habitat preferences. Since younger nymphs are largely responsible for direct damage to apples, their habitat preference should be recognized during sampling for population monitoring purposes.
