Relationships between Phytoseiulus persimilis and other enemies of the twospotted spider mite on hops

Abstract: Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot was introduced on hop plants at 10, 20, and 30 per plant for control of the twospotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch. P. persimilis became established on hops but the predator-prey populations were retarded by an infestation of the hop aphid, Phorodon humuli (Schrank). Phosalone when applied to reduce aphid numbers also killed P. persimilis but permitted survival of Typhlodromus occidentalis Nesbitt, a native phytoseiid predator of T. urticae on hops. A laboratory study of the interaction of P. persimilis with T. occidentalis and the coccinellids Stethorus punctillum Weise and the convergent lady beetle, Hippodamia convergens Guérin-Méneville, indicated that T. occidentalis and S. punctillum fed on eggs and larvae of P. persimilis. H. convergens fed on all stages of P. persimilis. In the field, T. occidentalis fed on P. persimilis eggs and larvae. P. persimilis did not feed on T. occidentalis eggs or larvae. T. occidentalis appears to be a better candidate than P. persimilis for control of T. urticae on hops.
