First report of Trichospilus pupivorus (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) parasitizing pupae of Anticarsia gemmatalis (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)
Entomologia Generalis 33 (4), 281-282
Abstract: Trichospilus pupivorus Ferrière 1930 (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) occurs in tropical and subtropical areas and was studied as potential biological control agent against pests of sugarcane, corn and cotton in several countries of Africa, Asia and the Americas [Boucek 1976], such as Barbados, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mauritania, Mauritius, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, and Sri Lanka [Ubaidillah 2006]. Lepidoptera pests of the Hyblaeidae, Limacodidae, Noctuidae, Nymphalidae, Oecophoridae, Pyralidae, Tortricidae and Zygaenidae families are primary hosts of this gregarious parasitoid [Kumar et al 1995]. Flies of the family Tachinidae are its parasitoids hosts [Boucek 1976] and Trichocomaceae and wasps of the family Eulophidae are its parasitoids associated [Lakshmanan et al 1979]. It occurs on plants of the Arecaceae, Fabaceae and Sterculiaceae families [George et al 1977]. The aim of this study was to report biological aspects of T. pupivorus parasitizing pupae of Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner 1818 (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in laboratory. Individuals of a wild strain of T. pupivorus were obtained after emergence in pupae of Thagona tibialis Walker 1855 (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae). These pupae were collected in a tree of Terminalia catappa L (Combretaceae) cultivated at the Universidade Federal de Viçosa (Ufv) in Viçosa, Minas Gerais State,Brazil (20º45'S, 42º51'W, 651 m). These insects were kept in temperature-controlled room (25±1 ºC, 12 h photoperiod and 70±10% relative humidity of air) of the Laboratório de Criação de Insetos (LCBI) from UFV in pupae of Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner 1818 (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and honey as food. This host was reared according to a modified methodology of Ferreira et al 2009.
