Valeur alimentaire de Pteridium aquilinum comparée a celle de Sasa japonica pour le cinquième stade de Schistocerca gregaria
[Food value of P. aquilinum compared with that of S. japonica for the 5th larval instar of S. gregaria]
Entomologia Experimentalis et Applicata 29 (3), 268-280
Abstract: The food value of the fern Pteridium aquilinum to 5th instar larvae of Schistocerca gregaria was investigated: this fern is not eaten in nature by S. gregaria. The fern was given either fresh, or as a dehydrated powder in an artificial diet. Feeding stimulants (sucrose or sinigrin) were added to the artificial diets. The grass Sasa japonica, which is used in laboratory rearing of locusts, was used as a control. Mortality, rate of development, food consumption and weight change were examined in the larvae. Using fresh plants, best results were obtained with S. japonica. On artificial diets, however, results were similar or better with P. aquilinum. No extra feeding was observed with sucrose or sinigrin. When weight increase was calculated against constant initial weight and food consumption, it appeared that the food value of P. aquilinum was higher than that of S. japonica.
