Hormonal action of two biologically active compounds in the desert locust
Entomologia Experimentalis et Applicata 17 (3), 348-354
Abstract: Injections of synthetic juvenile hormone (SJH) and the plant-growth retardant cycocel into freshly-moulted fourth instar larvae of Schistocerca gregaria partially sterilised the resultant adults. Both compounds affected larval development and subsequent maturation, but growth was apparently not affected. The SJH also elicited the development of larval-adult intermediates. Morphometrics indicated a tendency towards transitiform types in adults of treated.larvae : there were no pronounced phasiogenetic variations. The possible use of SJH and cycocel as insecticides and/or chemosterilants is mentioned.
