Emaravirus sorbi

Assigned virus:
European mountain ash ringspot-associated virus (EMARaV)

The European mountain ash ringspot-associated virus causes ringspots and chlorotic mottling on European mountain ash (Sorbus aucuparia). Infected trees are found in clusters in many parts of Europe. The disease has not been reported from closely related Sorbus species like S. aria (whitebeam) and S. torminalis (service tree). The eriophyid mite Phytoptus pyri is a suspected vector of the virus. The economic impact of the disease is small.

The virus is the type member of the genus Emaravirus which have a single-stranded multipartite RNA genome of negative orientation. The virus is associated with double membrane-bound virus-like particles, 80–120 nm in diameter.
