Elaeagnus umbellata (weed) Thunb. - (autumn-olive)

The plant is a shrub native to Asia which was introduced into North America around 1830. During the 1960s and 1970s it was widely planted to provide food and cover for wildlife. It was also studied as a possible food crop for its edible and lycopene-rich fruits. However, it has since become a weed and is competing with native plants, especially in open habitats on dry sandy soils. It can form monotypic stands and is now widely established on road sides, open spaces and forest edges in eastern North America.
