This genus of parasitoids contains around 30 species that parasitize fruit fly larvae (Tephritidae). From the view point of biological control of fruit fly pests the most important species is Diachasmimorpha longicaudata which is widely distributed and has been introduced into several countries as part of classical biological control programs.
Females have a body length of 3-4 mm and a very long ovipositor that enables it to reach the fruit fly larvae inside the fruit. Taxonomically the genus is characterized by the forewing venation and the propleuron lacking an oblique ventro-lateral carina.
