Dendrolimus spectabilis (Butler, 1877)

This moth is a pest of pine trees in eastern Asia and is mainly found in Korea and Japan. It is of quarantine concern in other regions like Europe (e.g. see the EFSA Panal on Plant Health 2022). Heavy infestations during outbreaks can lead to defoliation of the host trees.

There are 1-2 generations per year with the larvae feeding on the pine needles, dropping to the ground for hibernation, recolonizing the trees in spring, and finally spinning a cocoon on the branches.
