Culicoides stellifer (Coquillett, 1901)
This species of biting midge is found in North America, where it breeds in mud, enriched with organic matter (McGregor et al., 2018). For example, it has been frequently collected from mud in areas where deer (e.g. Odocoileus virginianus) lives or is kept. C. stellifer is suspected to transmit virus diseases to deer, like the epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (e.g. McGregor et al., 2019).
