Culicoides insignis Lutz, 1913
This biting midge has a wide distribution in the Americas, from Argentina in the south to southern parts of North America in the north. It feeds mainly on cattle and is the most common species associated with cattle in many parts of South America (e.g. Ronderos et al., 2003). C. insignis is regarded as the main vector of the bluetongue virus in these areas. In addition, in Florida it seems to play a role in the transmission of the epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus, a disease of ungulates (McGregor et al., 2021).
