Culex annulirostris (Skuse)
This mosquito species breeds in fresh water in Queensland and NT, Australia, as well as in surrounding regions and some Pacific islands. C. annulirostris feeds mainly on cattle and other mammals, including humans. It is considered an important vector of several viruses and diseases, including Ross River (RR) virus which causes epidemic polyarthritis, Barmah Forest virus and Murray Valley encephalitis. It is also a likely vector of Japanese encephalitis.
Swamps can contain large numbers of this species. In some areas, aerial control operations are initiated when routine surveys predict the emergence of large numbers of adult mosquitoes.
