Crioceris duodecimpunctata (Linnaeus, 1758) - (twelve-spotted asparagus beetle)

The beetle attacks asparagus in Europe and North America. It is native to Europe and temperate parts of Asia but has been introduced into North America (first record 1881). Larvae and adults feed on asparagus berries, in contrast to the related, leaf feeding and more common Crioceris asparagi. The economic impact of C. duodecimpunctata is restricted to ornamental asparagus species and to asparagus grown for seed production.

Mature larvae drop to the ground and pupate in the soil just under the surface. The species can be readily identified by its bright orange to red colouration and the six spots on each wing. The colouration is apparently a warning to potential bird predators.

For a review see Morrison and Szendrei (2014).
