Coenosia attenuata Stein, 1903

This tiger fly is widely distributed and regarded as an important polyphagous predator of insect pests in the Mediterranean region, from where it might have originated. The adults capture their prey during the flight, while the larvae feed on soil arthropods. It is often used for biological control of vegetable pests in greenhouses and has several useful traits. It kills more prey than it consumes, it can be used against the adults of small, soft-bodies pests, including adult whiteflies, drosophilids, leafminers, thrips and leafhoppers. The larvae feed on soil breeding pests like species of Bradysia.
