Clivina fossor (predator) (Linnaeus, 1758)
This ground beetle is common in Europe, and is also found in parts of Asia and North America. It lives in moist soil, for example in agricultural fields like rapeseed or sugar beet fields. The larvae live underground in tunnels and the adults have a similar lifestyle. They feed on arthropods, including pest insects like larvae of the rapeseed pollen beetle (Brassicogethes aeneus).
The adults are the overwintering stage. They have typically a length between 5 and 6 mm and a dark brown colouration. C. fossor can be identified by the morphology of the pronotum and the elytra.
