Ciborinia camelliae Kohn 1979 - (camellia flower blight)

This fungus infects only the flowers of camellia plants. The infected petals or the whole flower turn brown and the flowers then fall to the ground. When the petals are removed, a ring of white mycelium appears at the flower base. This distinguishes the disease from others diseases and disorders like frost damage.

The fungus forms sclerotia on the infected flowers which overwinter on the fallen flowers and produce cup-shaped apothecia the coming spring. The apothecia release/eject ascospores, often during the time camellia flowers develop. The ascospores spread the disease to other plants. The sclerotia can remain viable in the soil for several years.
