Choristoneura freemani Razowski, 2008 - (western spruce budworm)
This moth is causing serious outbreaks on conifers in North America. Mainly Douglas fir, fir, and spruce are infested. The two-year cycle spruce budworm, Choristoneura biennis, is regarded as a subspecies of Choristoneura freemani (= Choristoneura occidentalis), see Brunet et al., 2017 and is also a serious defoliator of conifers in Canada, attacking spruce and fir trees.
Taxonomic note: This species has long been named Choristoneura occidentalis Freeman, 1967. However, that name is preoccupied by Choristoneura occidentalis (Walsingham, 1891), an African species that has been re-assigned to Choristoneura (see Razowski, 2008).
